Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) POS Data, EDI 852 BIS Reporting System
Hudson's Bay Company, or HBC is the oldest commercial corporation in North American and one of the oldest in the world. The company was incorporated by British Royal Charter in 1670 and holds its headquarters in the Simpson Tower in Toronto, Ontario. The first department store opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1881. Originally, most of the stores were located in remote towns, but in 1964 HBC acquired the Morgan's chain of stores in Central Canada and rebranded them as The Bay. This gave HBC a presence in the major downtown markets. In 1978 HBC expanded by acquiring Simpson's department stores, which were converted to The Bay stores in 1991. It was in 2008 that HBC was purchased by NRDC Equity Partners, which already owned Lord & Taylor. Today, Hudson's Bay Company is comprised of the following retail chains (see additional entries for them): Hudson's Bay (formerly The Bay), a major Canadian department store Home Outfitters, a Canadian kitchen, bed and bath specialty store Lord & Taylor Saks Fifth Avenue
