Cardinal Health started in 1971 as Cardinal Foods, a prominent regional food distributor. In 1979, Cardinal purchased a Zanesville, OH drug distributor as its entry into the pharmaceutical distribution segment. In 1983, Cardinal Health went public and began a period of mergers and acquisition. Within the first few years Cardinal Health had acquired more than a dozen US drug distributors and sold its foods division in 1988. Cardinal Health has positioned itself as a top distributor of pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies and equipment in the United States. Its main customer base includes pharmacies, hospitals, and doctor's offices. Medicine Shoppe retail pharmacies are a subsidiary of Cardinal.
