Big W POS Data, EDI 852, EDIFACT
Big W is one of the largest chains of discount department stores in Australia. It is a division of Woolworths Limited, the largest retailer in Australia. Its main competitors are Kmart and Target - both owned by Wesfarmers. Big W was created in 1960 as an additional store type to Woolworths Supermarkets. The focus was to have the Big W brand operate as a carrier of general merchandise while Woolworths focused on the grocery aspect of the market. The first Big W standalone store opened in 1976, with the separation of Big W and Woolworths supermarkets largely completed by 1989.
